Hi guys, Tegan here with some advice on burning fat, and why quick fixes just don’t work….
In our fast paced society everyone is on the lookout for quick fix solutions, especially when it comes to losing weight and shaping up. And with so many ‘fat burning’ products on the shelves with all their amazing promises you could be forgiven for buying in to it all. But when you think about it, if it really was that easy, wouldn’t we all have the bodies we desire.
Most common Fat burning products contain chemicals and stimulants which promise to “increase metabolism, inhibit fat absorption and suppress appetite.” Sounds way to good to be true, and for the most part it is.
Usually fat burners that promise to increase your metabolic rate will contain some form of caffeine or other similar stimulants that will give you that “buzz.” If you have ever read about or done a liver cleansing or ‘detox diet’ you will notice one of the first things they tell you is to cut out caffeine because it is a toxin and the liver has to work very hard to process and eliminate such toxins from our system. The liver also plays a large role in fat metabolism by converting fat in to usable energy to be burned during exercise and for basic bodily functions. If we pump our liver full of toxins then it will be so busy processing them that it will not be very efficient at metabolizing fat, which seems a little counterproductive!
Fat absorption inhibitors are another common weight loss drug. These are said to work by preventing the body from absorbing fats in the food we eat. That sounds great right? Until you find out how… Basically they will have a laxative effect, which can lead to malnutrition and deficiencies in other vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids (the good fats) some people on these types of drugs have reported abdominal cramping and an inability to control bowel movements!!! Ewww!
The other common form of fat burner is an appetite suppressant, which mess with your brains messages telling you that you’re not hungry. Alarm bells should be ringing… very loudly! Humans are built for survival. A certain amount of body fat is required to sustain life so when people skip meals or just don’t eat the body goes in to “survival mode.” This means the body will start to work against you by slowing down your metabolic rate and preserving every kilogram of fat it possibly can! The exact opposite of what you’re trying to achieve!!
There is truth to the theory that a faster metabolism equals more efficient fat burning. However your metabolic rate is a direct result of your lean muscle mass. No one is born with a fast or slow metabolism and you can’t create a long term increase with artificial stimulants. The only way to have a positive effect on your metabolic rate is to increase your lean muscle mass with weight training. This works because muscle, unlike fat is living tissue which requires energy during exercise and at rest, so the more muscle you have the more fat you burn!!
So to burn more fat and reach your goal weight asap and maintain it, all you need to do is increase your exercise and eat healthy! Get at least 30 minutes of cardio most days plus weight training a few days per week. Then be disciplined and support your training with good nutrition because we all know…. “You can’t out train a bad diet!”
