
Melissa started her training with Red E in October 2018 as part of our twice-annual 8 Week “Little Black Dress” Project. The goals she set for herself for the program were simple – lose weight and improve her general fitness. Since then she has grown into an entirely new women and significantly blown these goals out of the water!
Like many of us, Mellissa has had to juggle her family, her work, her personal hobbies and her training. With limited time to make it to multiple PT sessions each week, Mellissa was encouraged to focus on staying active in her own ways outside of the studio. This included Park Run, paddle boarding, hiking and playing netball. Melissa’s training program is entirely based around strength progressions to ensure we are able to continue building and maintaining muscle mass, getting the cardio element of her training in through social activities with friends and family.
The execution of simple nutrition principles and adjusting her eating habits has had a massive impact on Mellissa body composition. In just five months (October – February) Mellissa has dropped 22cm from her body, 6.3kg and 3.2% body fat. At first Mellissa was slightly hesitant when she was told that if she eats more she will see a reduction in her body fat, but trusting the process and the advice given Mellissa stuck to the plan set out for her and five months later the results are proof of her hard work.
As impressive as her physical body changes have been, the focus for Mellissa’s training is entirely on progression of her performance. In such a short time her 5km park run time personal best has been improved by five minutes, while also making significant progress on lifts such as Deadlifts and Bench Press.

When did you start training and what was your motivation to start training with us here at Red E?
I started with Rede at the beginning of October, 2018 for the 8 Week “Little Black Dress” challenge.
What were your goals?
My goals were primarily to lose weight and to become fitter.
What have you achieved? What benefits are you experiencing?
This is hard to narrow down because there are so many… I have lost 6.3kgs, 3.2% body fat and 22cm, I have dropped 3 dress sizes. I improved my 5km run time by over 5 minutes, I can do 10 consecutive push ups on my toes (I could not do 1 when I started). I feel stronger, fitter and healthier. I have never felt more confident in my own skin.
What did you do to achieve your results?
I changed my eating habits, I committed to 2 weight training sessions a week and I maintained my otherwise active lifestyle which includes working full time, being a single mum, playing netball and paddle boarding or hiking socially.
What permanent lifestyle changes have you made?
Weights sessions are like an addiction! I’ll never go back to a cardio only exercise schedule now. I also realised I actually needed to eat more to lose weight.
Fave healthy food: Avocado.. on everything.
Fave treat food: Vanilla Latte (on skim milk to save some calories )
Fave exercise: I love exercises I can measure and improve on, like deadlifts and bench press.
Least Fave exercise: anything on the floor… squat thrusters is maybe the worst one.

Advice for others starting out… Don’t measure your own success against anyone else’s, instead look back at where you started and how far you’ve come.
