For a long time we have known that too much sugar in our diet can lead to some major health issues such as diabetes, obesity and tooth decay. But what you may not know is sugar has also been linked to various cancers, premature aging, depression gallstones, osteoporosis….. And the list goes on!
So why do we continue to consume this sweet white stuff??
Unfortunately sugar is a highly addictive substance, some experts refer to it as a ‘Class A Drug’ and consider it to be just as addictive and destructive to our bodies as nicotine or heroin!!
Refined sugar has absolutely no nutritional value what so ever! Humans have come up with this method to process sugar, extracting the sweetness and discarding the good bits containing fiber, vitamins and minerals. What we are left with is the pure white poison which is sabotaging our health and fitness goals, and leaving many people depressed, lethargic and moody!
When consumed, sugar is processed by the liver. The sugar is absorbed so quickly that the liver cannot process it fast enough for the body to burn it off as sugar. So the liver has to convert the sugar to fats. These fats are sent it into the bloodstream as triglycerides. With each mouthful of sugar these fatty acids in our bloodstream increase, and the hormones that tell our brain we are full and to stop eating are weakened. The more fats the weaker these signals get and before you know it you’ve eaten a ridiculous amount of chocolate or lollies and your feeling a whole lot of regret.
Having all these fatty acids flowing through your blood has many consequences besides making us fat! In addition to the conditions mentioned above it will increase the risk of high cholesterol, heart disease, pancreatitis, stroke, fatty liver, metabolic syndrome and CANCER!!! Even worse news is that sugar not only increases the risk of cancer but the SUGAR FEEDS CANCER! Accelerating the growth of cancer cells and helping to spread it through the body!
And you are not home free even if you do manage to maintain a ‘healthy’ weight, if you regularly binge on sugary treats your insides are still being damaged and there is still an increased risk that you will develop complicated health issues.
The good news is, if you already have high levels of triglycerides it can be treated! Start by improving your diet and increasing exercise with the guidance of your doctor. I would recommend working with a personal trainer if you are relatively new to exercise to ensure your working at a safe level which will still achieve the desired results.
If you don’t have high levels of triglycerides then kick the sugar habit now before it’s too late!! Don’t let the sweet poison control your life and sabotage your goals!!
