Kathy Makin has been training with Red E Personal Training’s Corporate Training program where the Red E Trainers visit the workplace. In early 2014, Kathy arranged for the staff at Mercy College Group to have a trainer visit them at the school twice per week.
Kathy’s goal was to improve her overall strength, her cardiovascular fitness and to lose cm’s off her body, which she has not only achieved but has surpassed in every aspect.
Since commencing training Kathy Kathy has been very consistent in attending those two Bootcamp sessions every week! She also power walks 5kms a few times per week and keeps track of her eating by keeping a daily diary of what she has consumed that day.
With her consistency over the years, Kathy has lost over 20kgs and dropped 3 dress sizes!! Kathy previously had a bone mineral density test done and her results showed that her bones were over 80 years old. Through all of her hard work over the last few years, when she retested a few weeks ago her results have improved by 40%.
When Kathy first started with us she was battling injuries and couldn’t do a lot of exercises but now she is doing wonderfully, she is the first one in the session to be pushing herself, always up for a challenge and motivating everyone else training with her by keeping them on their toes making sure they are not slacking off. Kathy is a pleasure to train and never gives up. We can’t wait to see what 2018 has installed for you. Congratulations on being awarded our December 2017 ‘Client of the Month’!!
What was your motivation to start training with us here at Red E?
Three years ago when I was 59, I crouched down to pick something up off the floor at work and realised just how much strength I had lost in the muscles of my legs for getting up. I had to use the desk to help me. It just so happened, in the next couple of days, I had an email forwarded to me from Selina at Red E to the College, about health, nutrition and exercise. I organised for her to come in and talk to the staff. I also arranged, with the permission of the Principal, for Bootcamp classes to be held at the College twice a week for staff. These classes were subsidised by the College as the Principal is aware that exercise may be of benefit the staff and their health and well-being,
What were your goals?
To become fitter, strengthen my muscles and lose weight.
How have you gone with your goals? What have you achieved?
Wow!! Where do I begin. The first year I could see and feel the benefits and was amazed at my achievements. The second year the progress was more evident and I really started watching my diet and the quantity I was eating by writing everything I ate down each day. I lost about 12kgs. This year ‘Oh my goodness’, I have lost a further 6-7kgs and my fitness levels have increased ten fold. There are 3 other women who have been attending bootcamp from the beginning and 2 others who have been doing it for 2 years and I am so proud of our achievements and what we are doing each session. I’m flabbergasted at our abilities each week. Our fitness level is due to the crew from Red E. They are all so wonderful and supportive.
What benefits are you experiencing?
My health, fitness and wellbeing have improved. I have dropped two dress sizes (sometimes three depending on the brand). I just love feeling so well!!
What did you do to achieve these results?: Persevered with my diet and attending the Bootcamps. From the beginning of 2016, for 5 months, I wrote everything I ate in a day in a diary (I measured and weighed everything). I stuck to 1200 calories a day; (I know this is NOT always recommended), but it worked for me; won’t work for everyone. It helped me become aware of the amount of food I ate and how much I really needed to eat. I still mentally calculate my daily intake each day. I attend a Red E Bootcamp in the gym at work, for an hour twice a week (Monday and Wednesday) of an afternoon with other staff and power walk five kilometers, a couple of times a week.
What permanent lifestyle changes have you made?
I enjoy exercise, doing something at least 3-4 times a week. I am very conscience of what I eat; I splurge every now and then but nothing like I used to and certainly not every day. I don’t fill up when I have a meal (the quantity on my plate is a lot smaller) and I make healthier food choices when out. When shopping I no longer look longingly at the cakes and lollies; I walk past them without a thought. Just love who I am now!!
Fave healthy food: Quinoa salad with with roasted pumpkin, sweet potato, beetroot and pomegranate.
Fave treat food: Gluten free Wallaby bites and nuts.
Fave exercise: Skipping, power walking.
Most “dreaded” exercise: Bike riding (in the gym) & wall sits
Favourite quote: “Great work girls!!”
Advice for others starting out: Start now… today, not tomorrow. Whether it be watching what you eat or exercising. List all the food you eat each day, as it makes you realise the quantity your eating. Get out and go for a walk; it only takes 30-40 mins out of your day and you’ll feel so much better after. Get advice from the crew at Red E they are so helpful and supportive. Baby steps to start out don’t overdo it in the beginning. It will take at least 4 weeks to train your body and mind, but persevere and the you’ll just love the outcomes. Good luck, and “Great work, everyone!!”
