Unfortunately many people are resigned to the fact that Christmas means gaining a few kilograms and there is nothing that can be done about it.
This is simply not the case, and they couldn’t be more wrong. Just like any other day, Christmas day and the whole festive season is all about choices. No one is making you eat everything you lay eyes on.
How would you prefer to feel – so full and bloated that you can’t move for an hour, or satisfied and able to function normally?
Start the day with some exercise. There’s no reason why you can’t get out and go for a walk first thing. You would be surprised at how much fun it can be – you can see the kiddies out and about playing with their new toys. If you have kids of your own, take them out to enjoy their new gifts as any additional movement counts!
Chances are, once you’ve started the day with exercise, you’ll find you’re less likely to want to nibble all morning. Mentally you’re set up – you’ve done the hard work, so why ruin it? If mornings aren’t possible, get the family together for a mid-afternoon walk or time at the park.
When it comes to food, apply portion control. There will be lots of yummy food, just be sure to grab a little of each. Stay away from all the nibblies before lunch; most of the time it’s a simply a case of “I see it, I must eat it”. Out of sight, out of mind usually works!
Drink water as much as you can as this will keep your mouth occupied and help you stay away from the empty calories in softdrinks. Leave any alcohol to enjoy at lunch – and remember, moderation is the key.
Christmas Day doesn’t have to mean eating till you can’t move. Apply a little control – the food will always be there, it doesn’t all have to be eaten that day. You’ll feel more comfortable, you’ll enjoy the day more and your waistline will appreciate it!!
