Helen Ellis has been a long time committed member at Red E, training in our Bootcamp for Women Program! Helen started in July 2012, when another long-time member at the time, Kathy, brought her along for ‘Bring-A-Friend-Free’ Fortnight! Helen was disillusioned with training alone in the gym environment, and now she was training outdoors with other women, so from that time, she was hooked!
Her goals were to keep active, strong and healthy to feel inspired to exercise again and to make it FUN!
As well as committing to three bootcamp sessions per week, Helen also runs and cycles and never says no to any challenge!! She has participated in obstacle races, women’s only triathlons, fun runs and charity cycle rides!
Helen’s fitness, strength and flexibility (her total fitness) has increased heaps since starting Bootcamp. She joined our Kettlebell program when it started and the weight she can now use is something she would have never thought possible!!
Helen is an extremely committed and consistent Bootcamper, and always welcomes new members and supports those around her! Her will to continue to challenge herself with different events is admirable and we love having her with us! Congratulations Helen, you are a very deserving “Client of the Month” award winner!
What was your motivation to start training with us here at Red E?
I have always been interested in keeping fit by playing netball and doing gym work until multiple injuries forced an end to my netball days. I was getting disillusioned doing gym work alone and a friend suggested I try Bootcamp (thanks Kathy Wessel!). As I like training outdoors, I was hooked from day one all those five years ago.
What were your goals?
My goal was to maintain my fitness level, stay strong and healthy and have fun doing it. I would also like to be able to make it all the way across a set of monkey bars.
How have you gone with your goals? What have you achieved?
I thought I was quite fit until I started Bootcamp. My fitness level, strength and flexibility has improved far beyond what I thought I was capable of. I just set myself different goals throughout the year as I like to have something to work towards.
The monkey bars are a work in progress!! I’ve completed quite a few 5km and 8km Marina runs and various other local runs. This year I also completed the 10km Bridge to Brisbane run which was a terrific experience.
As I pretty much give anything a go, I’ve tackled the Women’s Only Triathlon for 3 years, and joined in the 35km River to Reef bike ride to the past 5 years and completed the Obstacles Go Mad course at Airlie Beach with the Red E team.
What benefits are you experiencing?
I love how I feel energised after a workout, it’s the best way to start the day. And thanks to the trainers and ladies at Bootcamp there’s always a laugh to be had.
I’ve also made some good friends at Bootcamp and have had many memorable experiences.
What did you do to achieve your results?
As well as Bootcamp three times a week, I run with friends 2-3 times a week varying the training with hills, interval and distance running.
During summer, I swap some of the running for swim training. Some weekends my husband & I ride the Bluewater Trail finishing with the necessary coffee shop visit.
What permanent lifestyle changes have you made?
Keeping my fitness and health a priority, having fun doing it and remaining injury free.
Fave healthy food: Most fresh fruits
Fave treat food: Anything chocolate related and wine!
Fave exercise: Surprising I don’t mind burpees but I just enjoy the variety of exercises in the Bootcamp sessions.
Most “Dreaded” exercise: Rowing. Riding the stationery bike, then running across the bridge.
Favourite Quote? “Have a go!! You never know what you can do until you try!!”
Advice for others starting out…
Start out slowly, be consistent and reassess your goals if necessary. Don’t compare yourself to anyone else, just stay focused on your own goals.
I thought I was going to die both during and after my first session (thanks Chris) but thanks to support from the trainers and friends I’m still here and loving it five years later.
