Cathy Sullivan began her training with us in October 2016 in our Metafit program, before transitioning into our Bootcamp for Women program and then eventually joining our Semi-Private Training sessions in the studio. Right from the very beginning Cathy had a determination to make the most out of every session she attended, striving to push not only herself but everyone else around her to achieve their best.
In the first four months that Cathy was part of our Bootcamp program she dropped 27.5cm from her body measurements, while also making substantially strength and running progress. Despite being faced with a number of different obstacles since she began her training with us, she has remained one of our most positive and supportive clients.
Her resiliency and determination to maintain her health and fitness has been nothing but incredible and truly show that when you have a good reason to keep working at your goals, you will always find a way to reach them! Even after having some time away from training to recover from some niggling injuries, Cathy has come back and is still making outstanding progress and achieving very positive and healthy results in each of her check-ins. Her tenacity is shown continually and most recently by participating in Obstacle Hell! Congratulations Cathy, we love having you with us!
What was your motivation to start training with us here at Red E?
I was originally coerced by my daughter into going to a Metafit class, and not ever having been a member of a gym before, I was really quite nervous. I was always one of those people who thought everyone was going to judge me and I would humiliate myself, but from the minute I walked in to the Red E studio I felt at ease. There were people of all ages, shapes and sizes in the room, and everyone was there for the same reason, to get fit and to have a good time doing it. Once I was fully hooked on metafit, I then decided to try bootcamp, which I also loved. When injury set me back and I had to change the way I was training, I moved into the studio to try semi private, which I find is working for what I want to achieve now.
What were your goals?
My original goal of course was to lose weight, and I wanted to get my running speed up, but after my lower back injuries prevented me from running at all for a few months, I am now focused less on the scales and more on just staying fit and healthy.
What achievements have you made?
With all my setbacks since I started last year, I have had to go back to basics, really focusing on core strength. My biggest achievements to date would have to be connecting with the people I am training with, and learning to do things outside of my comfort zone.
What benefits are you experiencing?
I am definitely feeling better within myself and no longer feel guilty about taking the time to do something for myself. I have met some fabulous people and I no longer worry about what people might think. I’ll give anything a go, even if it is out of my comfort zone. I have also learnt to focus on the important basics (like using your core!), and the best part of all is that I am having fun!
What did you do to achieve your results?
Even when I thought I couldn’t do it, I would just get up, show up and do it. And after every set back, I just have to pick myself up, dust myself off, and get moving again.
What permanent lifestyle changes have you made?
I have learnt to love myself and to put myself first. This might not be the ‘right’ answer but this is important. Everything else follows from there. If you care about yourself, the rest of it just happens naturally.
Fave healthy food:
Eggs – some say they aren’t healthy but eggs are packed with essential vitamins, minerals and proteins that the body needs to function. I can eat them in any form, except raw!
Fave treat food:
Anything chocolate. I’m not an addict and can quite easily go without, but for a treat there’s nothing better. A good quality dark chocolate will win me over every time!
Fave exercise:
I love to run, but in the studio I am really starting to like the bench press. I think it’s a good way to test my strength.
Most “Dreaded” exercise:
Does anyone ever have a different answer than burpees? My god, who invented them, they are the.worst.exercise.in.the.world. (Especially if Harry is taking the class, he doesn’t let me get away with not doing them properly ;))

Advice for others starting out…
Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone, you just might like it. And if something sets you back, don’t stress, just trust the process and move again when you can. But most of all, have fun!
